Step 1 – Take a few slow, deep breaths to clear your mind.
It is unlikely that this will create a zen-like state of tranquility, but it will help you clear your mind for the next step.
Step 2 – Ask yourself, “What are the next three things that I am going to do?”
It’s a simple question. What are the next three things you are going to do?
Step 3 – Write those three things down on a Post-it note or in a notebook.
Below are several examples. A Post-it note is great for a list you have no need to review later. A notebook is easier to review and can also serve as a way to record your activities and accomplishments over the long-term. In a notebook you’ll also have more space for writing descriptions.
The notebook examples below are meant to display as two columns, but will shrink down to one column on a mobile device. If you are viewing this on your phone and like the one column format feel free to adopt it. I prefer using a full-size college-ruled notebook, but you might want to use something else.
If you like using Post-it notes please keep doing so. I still do. However, keep in mind that a notebook gives you an easier way to track your progress over time – it is much better at conveying history and context.

Step 4 – Start working on one of those three things immediately.
You can pick any of the three things on your mini to-do list – the important point is that you begin working on one of them immediately.
Step 5 – Do everything you can to complete all three items on the mini to-do list.
Most of the time you will be able to complete all three. If not, don’t worry about it – just move on to the next step.
Step 6 – Mark each item accordingly.
Circle an item that you start but can’t finish
X-out an item you decide not to do
Step 7 – Repeat.
If you used a Post-it note add it to your “stack” and start a new one. Writing in a notebook? Add the next three things under the last three things. For clarity, add a blank line to separate your mini to-do lists or clusters of three items.
